The public failure of House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) to secure the 217 votes needed to pass his debt ceiling compromise Thursday is a major setback for him personally but may not change all that much in the calculus of a deal in advance of the Aug 2. default deadline.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) had already said the Boehner bill was DOA and now he has absolutely no incentive to even consider the provisions in the legislation if (and that?s a big ?if?) it can even pass the House.
